Ubud is the center for art and culture in Bali and there's a lot to see in this charming town. It was quite unfortunate that we barely had a day to spend there. BUT we all promised we will go back and stay there and immerse ourselves in its beauty and culture.
One of the reasons we went to Ubud was to try Ibu Oka Babi Guling. It was quite funny that we had to go that far to eat lechon (suckling pig), but hey, we wouldn't pass up the chance to try another version of this well-loved delicacy.
Babi guling is roasted pig, much like our lechon. And Ibu Oka has been serving babi guling for more than two decades and is already an institution in Ubud. It is known to serve the best babi guling in the island.
Prior to roasting, the pigs are stuffed with balinese herbs and spices, and then roasted to perfection for about five hours.
One serving -- slices of suckling pig, crackling (skin), balinese vegetable (with herbs and spices) and rice would cost Rp20,000.
Did I like it? A bit. It wasn't really bad. The suckling pig was okay, but the vegetable/herbs they poured on top of it is an acquired taste and my tongue needs some education to like it. Besides, I'm from Cebu and is there better suckling pig than the ones we have in Cebu? Anthony Bourdain once said about Cebu's lechon: "Best pig ever." :D
I still encourage you to try Ibu Oka's babi guling if you ever find yourself in Ubud one day. :)
Go early though because they close as soon as they sell out (and they sell out fast)!
