Lilo-an, Cebu.

Because I am in Cebu right now, it is just right that I feature my favorite places in my beloved hometown. One of those places is Lilo-an, a peaceful town about 19 kilometers from Cebu City. Lilo-an holds so many wonderful memories because I used to go to this place with my paternal grandparents when I was a young girl. We used to play table tennis at a friend's house or just hang out at my grandparents' farm.

Whenever I am in Cebu, I visit Lilo-an to go to Titay's. But that is for another blog entry. :)

Places to see in Lilo-an

The San Fernando Rey Parish Church
This is one of the oldest standing heritage structures in Lilo-an, established in 1844. There's an interesting story about this church. According to the town's official website:
"Told from generation to generation of Liloan families is the story of how a giant sea creature guards a treasure of gold in a cave under the altar.

Supposedly proof of the cave existing underneath the church, according to the elderly, is the hollow sound one will get upon tapping the altar. Depending on whose version or who’s telling the story, the giant sea creature could either be a huge red-eyed octopus, a giant fish, or a large half-fish half-human. Also, there are claims that a local fisherman was brave enough to go to the cave, the opening of which is supposedly a few meters from the seashore."
Trivia: This is the only Catholic Church in the entire Cebu island that is facing the west.

The Bagacay Point Lighthouse (or Parola, as the locals call it)

This coral stone lighthouse stands proudly and beautifully over a cliff facing the Camotes sea. The Americans built this parola 104 years ago and today, it has become the town's landmark. Both locals and tourists visit the place. It is also one of the favorite places for engagement shoots. I actually did two shoots there and the place is just amazingly photogenic.

Engagement shoot of Dee and James in 2010.

Other places to see:

Bantayan sa Hari. It is an old watchtower facing the Mactan chanel built during the spanish era.

Silot Bay. This is where the town got its name because 'lilo,' or a whirlpool of seawater made by strong currents has been found in the mouth of the bay. This is a 100 hectare shallow tidal lagoon surrounded by mangrove swamps teeming with marine life.

Suba Bridge. The bridge is found at the entrance of Silot Bay. It is standing on this bridge where you can actually see 'lilo' under it.

River in Mulao. This river connects to the neighboring town of Compostela and is said to be one of Lilo-an's pleasant surprises. This is a nice place to visit for those seeking eco-toursim adventures or for those who just love nature. Like most historical sites in Lilo-an, this river holds a fascinating tale that has been passed on from generation to generation.
"...a huge boulder, shaped like a boat anchored in the middle of the river, appeared to have turned into a real boat at night. “Complete with lights and crew,” some elderly attest, the boat cruised the Mulao river in what looked like an act of delivering loads of cacao somewhere." {from Lilo-an's official website}
Titay's. This is already an institution in Lilo-an. They make the famous rosquillos. So grab some on your way home.

Getting there:

From SM, you can take a jeepney to Lilo-an (take Compostela/Danao route) or a V-hire that goes to Danao. Or you can take a cab.

Festivals:

The town fiesta in honor of St. Ferndinand is celebrated every May 29 and 30.

Rosquillos Festival is celebrated every August.

Lilo-an has changed a lot in recent years. Development has reached this town. The famous Amara is in Lilo-an (pictured above), a beautiful, high-end real estate property. Although this town is changing, I love how they have so much respect for their own story and heritage. It has kept it's small town charm. And this will always be a happy place for me.
